Configuring Exchange to work with iPhone

Hello,
I have Exchange server 2003 installed on my server and I was wondering how I would go about configuring it so that I can add the exchange account on my iPhone.
I have been onto mobile services on the system manager and enabled it all.. but when I try and add the exchange account it says it cannot verify exchange details.

The server is only a home server so I connected my iPhone to the wireless which gave it a local ip matching the same subnet as the server.. so in theory with that connected and when I filled out the details it should work?

When I am not at home I was going to use VPN to connect to the it to allow it to work.. would this work?
