The growing interest in Guardian Agents is happening alongside a broader surge in the use of agentic AI. As more organizations adopt these self-directed agents, the need for tools like Guardian Agents becomes more urgent to ensure these systems act safely and in line with business goals.
According to Gartner, 24% of surveyed CIOs and IT leaders have already deployed a few AI agents. The survey also found that 50 percent of respondents are actively researching and experimenting with the technology. Moreover, 17 percent of CIOs and IT leaders plan to deploy AI agents by the end of 2026.
Avivah Litan, VP and Distinguished Analyst at Gartner, emphasized the growing need for safety and control mechanisms (known as “guardrails”) as AI agents become more common in enterprises. She recommends deploying Guardian Agents specifically to manage governance tasks such as monitoring, compliance, and risk management, helping ensure AI systems operate responsibly and securely.

There are two major security risks associated with AI agents, including credential hijacking and agentic interaction with fake or malicious sources. Credential hijacking occurs when attackers gain unauthorized access to the credentials (like passwords or tokens) used by AI agents. If compromised, these agents could be misused to access sensitive systems or data. Moreover, AI agents might unknowingly interact with malicious websites or data sources. This could lead them to take harmful or incorrect actions based on false or manipulated information.
“Agentic AI will lead to unwanted outcomes if it is not controlled with the right guardrails,” Litan explained. “Guardian agents leverage a broad spectrum of agentic AI capabilities and AI-based, deterministic evaluations to oversee and manage the full range of agent capabilities, balancing runtime decision making with risk management.”
