Support for new features ends in 2026, with security updates continuing through 2028.
Key Takeaways:
Microsoft is ending feature updates for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 PCs starting next year. While security updates will still be provided through October 2028, accessing new features will require an upgrade to Windows 11.
In an updated support document (via The Verge), Microsoft stated that users with a Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscription will no longer receive new features on Windows 10 in August 2026. For business customers, feature updates will end on October 13, 2026, for those using the Monthly Enterprise Channel, and on January 12, 2027, for users of the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.
Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 users will continue to receive security updates for Office apps until October 2028. At the time, however, the company didn’t reveal that new features wouldn’t be available for customers starting in 2026. Going forward, Microsoft will only provide “troubleshooting assistance,” and “technical workarounds might be limited or unavailable.” This means that users will need to upgrade to Windows 11 to get the latest feature updates on their PCs.
Microsoft has been encouraging Windows 10 users to transition to Windows 11 ahead of the October 14, 2025, end-of-support deadline. After this date, Windows 10 will no longer receive free security updates, bug fixes, or technical support, which could leave systems vulnerable to threats.
To ease the transition, Microsoft is offering paid Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for both consumers and organizations who still need some more time to upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 10 users can also get one year of ESUs for free by signing into the Windows Backup app or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
