Key Takeaways:

  • The percentage of AI PCs in use is expected to surge from 5% in 2023 to 94% by 2028.
  • 76% of IT leaders believe AI PCs will enhance productivity.
  • 60% of organizations plan to replace older machines, and 73% are accelerating PC refresh cycles to integrate AI capabilities.

IDC Research has found that the majority of organizations plan to invest in AI PCs this year, anticipating a significant boost in workplace efficiency. IT decision-makers see these advanced systems as key to enhancing employee productivity in enterprise environments.

A new IDC study, conducted on behalf of AMD, predicts a significant surge in AI PC adoption, rising from just 5% in 2023 to 94% by 2028. In November 2024, IDC surveyed IT decision-makers from large organizations across the US, UK, France, Germany, and Japan, revealing that over 97% plan to expand AI deployment to more employees.

AI PCs drive productivity gains and lower security concerns

Compared to the AMD 2023 Commercial Survey, the latest findings show a decline in security concerns regarding cloud-based AI tools, dropping from 67% in 2023 to 32%. Additionally, IT leaders are increasingly optimistic about AI PCs, with 76% believing they will enhance productivity—up from 67% last year. Most respondents (82%) view AI PCs favorably for employees and plan to invest in new hardware before the year ends.

“This reflects a broader trend toward democratizing AI capabilities, ensuring that teams across functions and levels can benefit from its transformative potential,” Tom Mainelli, IDC’s group VP for device and consumer research, explained. “As AI tools become more accessible and tailored to specific job functions, they will further enhance productivity, collaboration, and innovation across industries.”

Adoption challenges

AI PCs are computers with built-in artificial intelligence designed to handle complex tasks locally, without relying on cloud services. By integrating AI processors and software, these devices enhance productivity, security, and privacy by processing data directly on the device. This reduces costs associated with cloud-based AI solutions and minimizes risks related to data breaches and privacy concerns.

However, a November 2024 Intel study found that AI PC adoption in both enterprise and consumer markets has been slow. The main reason is a lack of awareness about their capabilities and benefits. Many users are unsure how AI PCs can improve productivity, security, and efficiency, leading to hesitation in adopting the technology. The study highlights the need for better education and awareness to help users fully understand the potential of AI PCs.

How businesses are preparing for the post-Windows 10 era

Microsoft plans to end support for Windows 10 in October this year. However, IDC’s research found that 58% of the computers at the companies surveyed were still using Windows 10 as of last year. Most of the organizations have not yet upgraded to Windows 11, possibly due to factors like cost, compatability issues, or the effort required for migration.

IDC mentioned that 60% of organizations plan to replace their Windows 10 machines with newer hardware. Moreover, 73% of companies are speeding up their PC refresh plans, aiming to upgrade their technology infrastructure to support AI capabilities and improve overall performance.

IT decision makers are advised to prepare for the increasing integration of AI in applications. Additionally, businesses should actively collaborate with ISVs to stay updated on new AI-powered features in software. It’s also recommended to work with hardware vendors to understand their product roadmaps and optimize AI deployments.
