Microsoft enhances Azure Migrate with application aware experiences and an updated user interface to simplify cloud migrations.
Key Takeaways:
Microsoft has introduced new application-aware experiences in preview in Azure Migrate. The latest update enables administrators to detect, analyze, and gain deep insights into the applications operating across their servers and virtual machines.
Azure Migrate is a centralized service that allows organizations to migrate their on-premises servers, databases, applications, and virtual machines to the Azure cloud. It offers tools for discovering existing infrastructure, assessing its readiness for the cloud, estimating costs, and performing the actual migration.
“A key step in any cloud transformation plan is a current state analysis of the entire IT estate covering workloads and applications, and relationships/ dependencies among them,” Microsoft explained. “This allows you to gain insights into the total cost of ownership, identify suitable IaaS and PaaS targets, and receive tailored migration and modernization guidance.”
The new application aware experiences in Azure Migrate currently support various workloads, including Linux, Windows Server, SQL Server, .NET webapp on IIS, and Java on Tomcat running on platforms such as Microsoft, VMware, AWS EC2, Bare-metal, GCP CE, and Xen.
Microsoft notes that this feature will also provide migration assessments for Azure VM, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure VMware Solution (AVS), App Service Code, Azure SQL Database, App Service Containers, and Azure Kubernetes Service. This feature will also offer in-line Lift and Shift migration support to Azure VM.
Additionally, Microsoft has introduced tag support in Azure Migrate that allows administrators to group related workloads that make up an application. This helps streamline organization and migration planning. Customers can choose to modernize their applications using recommended tools through re-platforming or refactoring, or opt to rehost them directly using the built-in Azure VM migration experience.
Microsoft has also announced a refreshed user interface coming to Azure Migrate. This new experience brings a new table of contents and an overview page that makes it easier to navigate. Administrators can also use search and sort options to explore discovered workloads. There is also an option to quickly create and visualize different migration and modernization strategies for making informed decisions.
Microsoft notes that IT admins can access the new features and interface by clicking the banner in the classic Azure Migrate experience. If you’re interested, you can learn more about Azure Migrate on this support page.
