Key Takeaways:

  • Hotpatching support now continues through October 2027 for Azure Edition deployments.
  • Windows Servers can keep receiving monthly security updates without routine reboots.
  • Microsoft recommends planning migrations to Windows Server 2025.

Microsoft has extended hotpatching support for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition through October 2027. This extension enables Azure-hosted servers to continue receiving monthly security updates without requiring routine reboots.

Hotpatching is a software-update method that allows security fixes to be applied to a running system without requiring an immediate restart. Hotpatching updates parts of the software that are currently running in memory to help organizations reduce downtime. This approach can simplify maintenance, shorten patch deployment windows, and improve security by making it easier to install updates promptly.

Microsoft plans to end mainstream support for Windows Server 2022 on October 13, 2026, but will continue to offer extended support until October 14, 2031. However, this extension applies only to Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition. It won’t be applicable to organizations running standard on-premises Windows Server 2022.

“Hotpatch update support for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition has been extended through October 2027. Devices enrolled in Hotpatch updates will continue to receive monthly security updates without requiring a restart. To learn more, see the Windows Server 2022 lifecycle page,” Microsoft explained on its Windows Release Health dashboard.

What does this change mean for Windows Server admins?

For IT administrators, this extension provides greater flexibility to keep server environments secure while minimizing operational disruption. Organizations running Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition will also have more time to plan and execute upgrades at a pace that aligns with their business and infrastructure requirements.

Microsoft is encouraging organizations to move to Windows Server 2025, which brings continued mainstream support, new security capabilities, and ongoing feature enhancements. The release includes enhanced Active Directory security, stronger SMB protections, improved hybrid-cloud integration through Azure Arc, and better storage performance.
