M365 Changelog: (Updated) Your To Do users will no longer be able to join shared lists from consumer accounts

MC551021 – Updated June 1, 2023: We have updated the rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

In Microsoft To Do, users from your tenant can be members of lists that are shared with them through consumer accounts (sharing accounts can only be consumer accounts and not accounts from other organizations). We are retiring this feature in the near future.

When this will happen:

We will begin rolling out this change in late June (previously late May) and expect to complete by late July (previously early July).

How this affects your organization:

If users are members of lists shared via consumer accounts, this will affect your organization in the following ways:

  1. Starting May 30, 2023, your users would not be able to join and contribute to lists from outside of your organization.
  2. Starting June 30, 2023, your users who had already joined lists from outside of your organization would be removed from the said shared lists. The shared lists from outside of your organization would be removed from the users’ accounts.

So, for example, if a user was sharing a list from their personal account to their corporate account, the list will be removed from the user’s corporate account To Do from June 30,2023.

What you can do to prepare:

You may want to update the To Do users in your company and update your documentation about the upcoming change.
