M365 Changelog: Updated timing changes: Whiteboard on OneDrive for Business

MC282992 – Updated December 07, 2021: The early opt-in for ODB is now fully available.

As a reminder, during early opt-in, only the following clients are supported:

Whiteboard for the web
Whiteboard for Teams meetings and channels
Whiteboard on Android
Whiteboard on iOS

The following clients are not yet supported:

Whiteboard users joining from Teams mobile
Whiteboard on MTR
Whiteboard on Windows
Whiteboard on Surface Hub

The update for MTR and Teams mobile clients will begin rolling out in mid-January and complete by late January. The update for Windows and Surface Hub will begin rolling out in late February and complete by mid-March.

Update: Microsoft wants to inform you that the timing has shifted for the Microsoft Whiteboard move to OneDrive for Business storage which will integrate seamlessly across the suite, so you can create, share, discover, and manage whiteboards as easily as any Office document.

Previously (April – MC253185), the opt-in period was set to complete in September and setting to default-on would complete in October.

The below timing changes will provide additional preparation time for your tenant. Additionally, the opt-in will now support web, Teams, Windows 10 and iOS clients.

Note: If your organization is not using Whiteboard you can safely disregard this message.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 66767.

When this will happen:

Opt-in to use OneDrive for Business: will begin in early November (previously late October) and complete at the end of November (previously mid-November).

Making OneDrive for Business the default: will begin in mid-January and complete in late February.

Users on Surface Hub: the application will be updated in early November and be complete in mid-November.

If you have a Surface Hub, you may wish to wait for that update before opting in.

How this will affect your organization:

When this change occurs, all new whiteboards will be created in the OneDrive for Business of the person who starts or creates a whiteboard. This applies to whiteboards created in the Whiteboard stand-alone applications and in Microsoft Teams. All previously created boards will remain in Azure and can continue to be used/edited by end users.

What if my users do not have OneDrive for Business provisioned?
- Any users who do not have OneDrive for Business provisioned will no longer be able to create new whiteboards when this change is implemented, though they can still edit their previously created boards. They can also collaborate on any whiteboards that are shared with them by others who have OneDrive for Business.
How can I migrate previously created content to OneDrive for Business?
- Microsoft will be sharing more details on how to migrate your content.

What you need to do to prepare:

If you wish to opt-in, make this change by early September. When this change takes effect, you will need to ensure that users have OneDrive for Business provisioned or are notified of this change.

To change the setting, sign into the Microsoft 365 admin center and search for Whiteboard in the search bar. On the Whiteboard settings page, check the box Enable storing new whiteboards in OneDrive.
