Microsoft Makes SQL Server Migration to Azure VMs Generally Available in Azure Arc

New capability brings assessment, migration, monitoring, and cutover workflows into a single Azure experience.

Key Takeaways:

  • SQL Server migrations to Azure Virtual Machines are now generally available through Azure Arc.
  • Administrators can manage discovery, assessment, migration, and validation from one portal.
  • The built-in monitoring and migration workflows help simplify modernization projects.

Microsoft has announced the general availability of SQL Server migrations to Azure Virtual Machines through Azure Arc. This new feature simplifies the migration of on-premises SQL Server workloads to Microsoft Azure by bringing the entire migration process into a single, integrated experience.

Many organizations want to move their SQL Server workloads to Microsoft Azure. However, the migration process is often complicated by mixed environments, legacy dependencies, and the need to use multiple tools for assessment, migration, monitoring, and management. This approach can increase operational effort, create inconsistencies, and slow down modernization projects. This issue makes it harder for IT teams to choose the right cloud destination while maintaining a smooth and predictable migration experience.

One portal for discovery, assessment, and migration

SQL Server migration enabled by Azure Arc is designed to simplify this process by bringing together migration activities into a single experience in the Azure portal. This service allows administrators to manage the entire migration lifecycle through a single tool in the Azure portal. They can perform discovery, readiness assessments, migration planning, configuration, monitoring, validation, and cutover from a single interface.

“Migration to SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines follows the same operational model already available for Azure SQL Managed Instance migration scenarios. Customers use the same migration dashboard, monitoring experience, and guided workflow regardless of the destination. This consistency reduces learning curves, simplifies operational processes, and enables teams to select the most appropriate Azure SQL platform without changing migration methodology,” Microsoft explained.

How does SQL Server migration to Azure Virtual Machines work?

The migration process is designed to be managed from a single experience in the Azure portal. After a source SQL Server instance is connected through Azure Arc, IT admins can assess readiness, choose SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines as the target, configure migration settings, and track progress through a guided workflow.

Azure Migrate and Azure Database Migration Service use Azure storage as an intermediate staging area when required to handle the movement of data. There are also built-in monitoring and validation tools that help ensure a smooth transition before the final cutover to production.

This new solution helps organizations simplify modernization projects while reducing migration complexity and downtime. Keep in mind that the Azure Blob Storage account and the target SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines should be within the same Azure region. Azure Arc will apply the most recent uploaded backup and bring the target database online to complete the final synchronization.
