M365 Changelog: Additional API Capabilities for Tasks in Teams and Planner

MC449931 – Microsoft is introducing new application permissions capabilities for the Microsoft Planner APIs. This includes two sets of enhancements that will make it easier to work with tasks in your organization.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 101153

When this will happen:

Microsoft expects roll out to public preview in mid-November and expects to complete rollout by late November.

How this will affect your organization:

The two sets of enhancements rolling out include Business Scenario capabilities and Application permissions to existing Planner API capabilities. Business Scenario capabilities are designed to allow integrations with external sources so those external inputs can be represented as tasks for the appropriate team. As an example, you might create an app to listen for warning events from machine sensors monitoring for signs of machine failure, creating a task as a result.

In addition, adding Application permissions and Delegated permissions to new and existing Planner API capabilities will allow developers to create fully automated workflows without the constraints of requiring a signed-in user.

There will be no impact to your users unless someone develops an app to leverage these new API capabilities. Any application permissions capabilities would need to be authorized by an administrator.

What you need to do to prepare:

There is nothing you need to do to prepare for this rollout. You can find more information at our blog post here.
