Key Takeaways:

  • Microsoft has introduced a new Azure Migrate feature that simplifies the migration of on-premises VMware VMs to Azure Stack HCI.
  • The new feature allows IT administrators to reconfigure workload properties during migration.
  • Azure Migrate ensures that data remains on-premises during the migration process.

Microsoft has announced the public preview of a new Azure Migrate feature designed to facilitate the migration of on-premises VMware virtual machines (VMs) to Azure Stack HCI. This solution aims to streamline the transition process while offering organizations enhanced performance, scalability, and robust security.

Azure Migrate is a service that enables organizations to move their on-premises workloads to the Azure cloud. It offers a unified platform to help administrators discover, assess, and migrate servers, databases, applications, and data.

Azure Stack HCI is a hybrid cloud solution that integrates compute, storage, and networking into a single solution. This service supports running Windows and Linux virtual machines (VMs) and containerized workloads. It offers seamless integration with Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery, and Azure Security Center.

“The core of this release lies within the integration of Azure Migrate with our adaptive cloud framework, facilitating a smooth transition of Virtual machines from VMware to Azure Stack HCI. Azure Migrate is a proven solution used by numerous organizations to move on-premises workloads to Azure, and now, it extends its capabilities to support Azure Stack HCI as well,” Microsoft explained.

Benefits of using Azure Migrate for VMware to Azure Stack HCI migration

With Azure Migrate, IT administrators can complete the migration process without the need to install and manage agents on each virtual machine (VM). This feature also enables customers to reconfigure workload properties (such as RAM and CPU) during the migration. Moreover, Azure Migrate optimizes network traffic to ensure that VMware workloads continue running smoothly while data is replicated in the background.

Additionally, Azure Migrate moves data from the VMware infrastructure to the Azure Stack HCI infrastructure. This ensures that organizations can keep their data on-premises while meeting regulatory and compliance requirements. The migration process also minimizes downtime for VMs running on on-premises VMware servers.

Microsoft highlights that the migration process requires both an Azure Migrate project and an Azure Migrate appliance installed on the customer’s on-premises VMware servers. Moreover, a target appliance must be set up on the Azure Stack HCI cluster, and you can find more details on this support page.
