Modern SharePoint Web Parts — Yammer Web Part

ModernSharePointWebPartUpdates

I am a huge fan of the Modern SharePoint experience. Is it perfect? Definitely not. However, the modern experience offers a responsive design, easy-to-use web parts, and is user-friendly. I have seen customers adapting to Modern SharePoint faster than they did to Classic SharePoint. The changes are following each other rapidly. The web parts delivered with the initial release of the Modern SharePoint Team Site are also evolving and regularly receiving updates. I want to keep you all up-to-date, so I decided to start a new series called Modern SharePoint Web Part Updates!

Let’s continue with the new Yammer Web Part.

The Modern SharePoint Team Site already had a Yammer Web Part but it was still based on the embed technology. Basically, the same Web Part we used within the classic SharePoint experience. The Web Part also wasn’t compatible with the new Microsoft mobile SharePoint App. Not great, not great at all. A new web part was announced during Ignite and is finally upon us. Let’s take a quick look!

My favorite part of the Modern SharePoint experience is the focus on end users. The overall experience has become more user-friendly. This is something I experience on a daily basis. You can see this within the Yammer Web Part options:

You can type the name of the Yammer Group and suggestions are provided. That’s really user-friendly! After entering the correct Yammer Group, you have three options:

  1. Top conversations: Most popular conversations from the group.
  2. Latest conversations: The group’s new or most recent conversations.
  3. Only conversations you choose.

All these options are pretty self-explanatory. Let’s pick the first option:

The look and feel is definitely improved and it is a better fit in the whole modern SharePoint experience. That said, a couple basic actions aren’t possible (at the moment):

  • Reply to a post
  • Like a post

These actions open a new tab in the browser. That’s a shame but I am positive this is going to be fixed in the near future. We are able to post a message:

You probably notice something is missing. We can only post plain text messages. A bit of a shame but again, I am positive this is going to be fixed in the near future.

Let’s round things up. I am happy to see a modern Yammer Web Part. The Web Part is responsive, so we can use it within the SharePoint Mobile App. That said, Yammer needs to fix the issues I mentioned. Those are basic actions that need to work.
