M365 Changelog: Migrate content from Box to Microsoft 365

MC244608 – Updated March 17, 2021: We have updated this post to ensure visibility. No changes have been made to the content below. Thank you for your patience.

This new feature release will enable admins to take advantage or our expanded support for third-party cloud providers and migrate content from Box.com to Microsoft 365. This release allows you to transfer your Box files and folders as well as convert Box notes into Word documents.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 68816.

When this will happen

Public preview: we will begin rolling this out in mid-March and expect to be complete by late March.

  • We will communicate via a new Message center post before this feature becomes generally available tentatively scheduled for late June 2021.

How this will affect your organization

You’ll be able to collaborate all in one place by migrating your Box documents, data, and users to OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams in Microsoft 365.

As you connect to a Box enterprise account, the service begins discovering users and their files. The service will automatically map to an individual’s OneDrive accounts, but you can also manually map to a specific OneDrive user account, SharePoint site, or a Teams channel.

If you want to migrate your content from Box into Microsoft 365, you can use this tool to copy your content from Box.com to Microsoft 365.

What you need to do to prepare

Sign-in to the SharePoint admin center, select Migration from the left pane and then select Box. You will be walked through the steps and be prompted for the pertinent information needed to start your migration.

See Migrate Box to Microsoft 365 with Migration Manager to learn more.

Note: To access, you must be a global admin or OneDrive/SharePoint admin to the Microsoft 365 tenant where you want to migrate your content.

This preview is currently supporting small to medium Box accounts. For the large Box accounts, some of the features may not work. You can use Mover.io if the size of this Box account exceeds the limit supported by this preview release.
