M365 Changelog: Reminder – Retiring Remote PowerShell use through Connect-IPPPSession

MC586563 – As communicated in MC541649 (April ‘2023), this is a reminder to SCC customers of the plans to retire the legacy Remote PowerShell (RPS) protocol starting July 15, 2023.

In line with our vision to enhance the security of our cloud, Microsoft plans to move the SCC admin experience to REST-based APIs.

In releasing the REST interface, customers do not need to use RPS to access EOP. Instead, RPS-based cmdlets will run as REST API calls instead of running via an RPS session. The REST API has the same cmdlets available and feature parity with RPS v1 cmdlets, so existing scripts and processes don’t need to be updated. Simply using the new module will ensure REST is used rather than RPS.

When this will happen:

Administrators will not be able to use RPS through Connect-IPPPSession after July 15, 2023. REST-based cmdlets are available now – Microsoft recommends customers switch at their earliest convenience.

How this affects your organization:

You are receiving this message because our reporting indicates your organization may be using RPS to connect to EOP.

What you can do to prepare:

Steps to switch to REST-based cmdlets:

  1. Install the EXO module version 3.2.0-Preview3 from here
  2. Use connect-ippssession -UseRPSSession:$false to establish connection.
