MC679524 – Microsoft is launching a new cmdlet to enable removal of orphaned and legacy eDiscovery holds. Today, customers often contact Microsoft support to remove legacy and orphaned eDiscovery holds from mailbox and SPO sites. This cmdlet will help users self-serve to remove eDiscovery holds and is available only in Security & Compliance PowerShell.

When this will happen:
Rollout will begin in early October and is expected to complete by mid-October 2023.
How this will affect your organization:
This cmdlet has three action parameters:
1. ‘Get Holds’ to get all holds stamped on a given mailbox or SPO site,
2. ‘Remove Hold’ to remove the specified Hold id stamp from the mailbox or SPO site and
3. ‘Get Hold Removals’ to get list of all holds removed using this cmdlet.
Users who have Compliance Administrator role group permission can use this cmdlet to perform the above actions. This feature can be accessed through the Security & Compliance PowerShell, Invoke-HoldRemovalAction.

There are no additional settings needed for this feature.
