M365 Changelog: Microsoft Graph Virtual Appointment SMS API Beta Launch

MC694390 – Developers will soon be able to programmatically create, update and send SMS notifications and reminders to external customers for Teams Virtual Appointments with Microsoft Graph.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID: 184497

When this will happen:

Preview: Microsoft will begin rolling out this feature to the Microsoft Graph Beta endpoint in late-November.

Standard Release: Microsoft will begin rolling out to the Microsoft Graph v1.0 endpoint in early-February.

How this will affect your organization:

The Microsoft Graph Virtual Appointment SMS API allows developers to send SMS notifications for scheduling confirmation, updates, deletions and reminders to external customers. SMS notifications include the date and time of the Teams Virtual Appointment and a shortened join URL. The external customer can opt out to all text messages for all Teams Virtual Appointments by replying ‘STOP’ to the text message. They can opt back in at any time by replying ‘START’.

What you need to do to prepare:

If you do not want users within your tenant to be able to access the SMS text notification feature in the Virtual Appointment Teams Meeting Template, you can implement a user-level policy via PowerShell to restrict access to this feature. You may consider updating your training and documentation as appropriate.
