M365 Changelog: Microsoft AutoUpdate Auxiliary Teams updates for devices running macOS devices versions below minimum

MC334275 – Microsoft will be making an addition to the Microsoft Teams update logic to include auxiliary updates via Microsoft AutoUpdate. This will reduce the number of devices running versions of Teams that are older or no longer supported.

You may have encountered issues where devices were running old versions of Teams that were not updating. Microsoft will be leveraging Microsoft AutoUpdate to update versions of Teams that may not have been updating due to usage patterns that do not allow the Teams built-in update logic to run its full update process.

Note:

  • Upon their next usage, macOS devices that are running versions of Teams below the latest fully released version will now receive updates via Microsoft Auto-Update where applicable.
  • If your organization is not using macOS devices with the Teams desktop application, you can safely disregard this message.

When will this happen:

Microsoft will begin rolling this out in mid-March and expect to complete rollout in late March.

How this will affect your organization:

You should see the version spread of Microsoft Teams on macOS devices reduce significantly with more devices running on the latest released versions of Teams.

What you need to do to prepare:

Expect to see updates for Teams appearing in Microsoft AutoUpdate.

Note: This change will only impact devices that have Microsoft AutoUpdate already installed with other Microsoft Products (e.g., Office). Microsoft Teams currently will not include Microsoft AutoUpdate with its installation PKG.
