    this is a relatively short question i guess.

    Has anyone ever used, with success, VMFS Recover (by Diskinternals) or any programs like this?

    That is – a person needs to recover a folder from a VMFS volume, whereby they hit “delete” “yes” instead of “download” “ok”

    there’s no sign of any other backup routines thus this looks ot be the only path available..

    Yes, I have used software that can recover deleted VMware Data files from Ease. VMware Data Recovery Tool is a professional utility to repair and recover the data from the damaged and corrupted VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk) files. If it is losslessly working for then you can also try.
