When opening Excel it crashes stating there is an “side by side” error, event ID 59.

here’s the dialog box: “C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice14EXCEL,EXE The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail”

Following is from the event log:

Activation content generation failed for “C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice14EXCEL.EXE.Manifest” on line 0. Invalid Xml syntax.

Also PowerPoint opens OK but when trying to open a file it says that there is a problem with the content of the file. Attempts to repair don’t work. The file opens on other systems so it is not the file.

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the C++ packages with no help. Any help would be appreciated.
