I have a potential problem detaching two Exchange 2000 SP3 servers. Disclaimer, this is the first pair of Exchange servers I’ve had to seperate, so bear with me if this is normal. A little background on my situation.
Customer was running Windows 2000 SP4 and Exchange 2000 SP3. Major drive crash happened, and a data recovery service was able to get the Exchange databases back intact. On a new set of drives, I reinstalled Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000. I restored from tape the Active Directory and did a disaster recovery installation of Exchange and attached to the databases. All in all, after opening a call with Microsoft, fixing some AD issues, free-busy, etc, things are running again. I think the AD may be a little funky, but running with it for the time being.
Customer then buys a new server and wants to migrate everything from the old server to the new. I install Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000 from scratch on it and add it to the domain, making it a DC and a member in the Exchange organization. I move their files and other apps over, as well as do Move Mailbox to move mailboxes over. Rehomed the public folders, and FSMO-type roles to the new server. I followed the Microsoft document on removing the first Exchange server in the site (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307917) and things have worked as they described.
The last step is to uninstall Exchange from the first server. Being nervous to do this, I’ve shutdown the first server hoping to test message flow and operation. This seems to be my problem area as mail does not flow through just the remaining server. Will uninstalling Exchange on the first server resolve this problem or should I be looking at other configuration issues?
There is a routing group present and both servers are listed as members. The new server is listed as the master. I have tried to delete the old server, but it doesn’t delete. Not sure if that’s related.
As a seperate issue, like I said, I’m thinking my AD or Exchange config is a little hosed up due to the restoring. This customer wants to upgrade to Exchange 2003 in Q4–I’m considering exporting everything to PST, uninstalling Exchange and reinstalling from scratch to make sure everything is good. Could use some feedback on that as well.
