ILM and SQL

Ok so…
The short of it:
Is there a primer/tutorial out there that discusses ILM (M$ Identity Lifecycle Manager) and/or SQL. I am not asking anyone here to write up anything because I have almost no knowledge of any form of database software. I can spell SQL and ILM and I know that they are databases, other than that… pretty much zilch.
The long of it (if you care):
I am the guy that does all of the server/backbone work in our 2000 computer school district. We have 3 Computer Tech I positions of which I am one (i.e. I am the sucker that does all the high paid work for chump change (sorry feeling a bit bitter right now)). Anyway so APPARENTLY the boss man decided to contract out and get an ILM server put in place last year because “you already had too much on your plate and I didn’t want you to have to deal with learning SQL from scratch for this.” Well… now the primary HDD is full on the server and it is not functioning and instead of getting to learn what SQL is and how it works, I have to crash learn it and figure out how to fix it. I now understand functionally what ILM does.
The actual issue is that the SQL Server Database Primary Data File is 34GB of the 50GB C: drive on a server 2008 box. I managed to free up 60MB yesterday so the server is functioning at least, but I am not going to wait for it to get full again before I do something about this…. So that being said…

I just am frustrated and have no idea where to even start, other than slamming my forehead on my desk until they let me go home.
