    If you try to install Exchange 2007 into AD that already hosts E2K3 Exchange organization and you get an error message stating that dnsHostName is mandatory, check the application event log and you will probably find that the installation is trying to query Exchange server that is either offline or does not exist anymore. In my case that was E2K3 Exchange in test environment that was killed without proper cleanup and I had to delete manually it’s reference in the Config partition (somewhere beneath cn=Sites,cn=Configuration…)

    After the cleanup everything worked like a charm.
