I recently had an issue with a remote dc running on Windows 2003 Server R2 which had become tombstoned and needed to be demoted. Unfortunately due to the tombstone issue, the system would only be demoted via the /force command. The system seemed to handle the demotion fine and asked for a local user admin account password. Unfortunately when the system comes up now, the password will not work and domain accounts do not seem to be able to log into the system either.
As a side note, the system’s share is still available and functioning as it should, however any other type of access is not possible. I am planning to use a cracking disk to see if I can reset the admin password, but am concerned that there may be issues – any ideas on what I may need to be prepared for?
