M365 Changelog: Cortana Voice Activation enabled by default in Teams Rooms

MC316436 – The below message applies to tenants with Teams Room Devices. Please disregard if your organization is not utilizing Teams room Devices.

Microsoft is making some changes to OOBE (out of the box experience) for Teams Rooms! Cortana Voice Activation will be enabled by default. Microsoft is changing the OOBE flow to include a screen to request your Cortana voice activation acknowledgement.

NOTE: The setting will be on by default but if desired, IT admins can decide to opt out at that moment by switching the toggle off.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 89161.

When will this happen:

Microsoft expects this rollout to begin in late January and they expect the rollout to be completed by early February.

How this will affect your organization:

You are receiving this message because all newly imaged Teams Rooms devices during setup will get this screen requesting your acknowledgement.

Administrators will be impacted and will be required to tap Next in the new screen to move forward when this change is implemented.

Users will be impacted if Voice activation toggle is turned on by IT admins. This gives users the opportunity to invoke Cortana by saying “Cortana” or “Hey Cortana” in meetings where a certified Cortana Teams Rooms device is present. Users will need to be educated and aware of the skill set Cortana supports (Eg. join meeting, end meeting, etc.)

What you need to do to prepare:

When this change takes effect, you will need to update your end user documentation to notify users Cortana is enabled in the room with that device.
